Excavation Services for Paving & Site Preparation

Proper excavation is the foundation of any well-built paved surface. Before asphalt goes down, the ground beneath it needs to be properly cut, graded, and compacted — and that work has to be done right. At J. Hunziker Asphalt Paving, we handle excavation as part of our paving projects and as a standalone service for site preparation, grading, and material removal across the Capital District and Mid-Hudson Valley. Whether it’s clearing ground for a new driveway or prepping a commercial site, we bring the same attention to detail underground as we do to the finished surface above it.

Site Preparation & Clearing

We clear and excavate sites ahead of paving, grading work, or construction — removing material and establishing the proper grade for what comes next.

Grading & Base Preparation

Correct grading is critical for drainage and long-term pavement performance. We grade and compact base material to spec before any asphalt is installed.

Material Removal & Haul-Away

We remove and haul off excavated material, old pavement, and debris so your site is clean and ready for the next phase of work.

They were thoughtul about the aesthetic decisions; their curves and margins were tidy.  Moreover, this job was quoted in '25 before Trump's war increased all input prices (especially oil).  Neverthless, Hunziker honored the pre-war quote with no fuss.  Further, the owner was on site throughout to ensure a great job.  All around, we are very satisfied with the experience.

They did a phenomenal job on our driveway last summer. Patient and understanding with removing some old errant tree roots left behind. It drains perfectly. I was amazed they knocked it out in one day.

Courteous, professional and fairly priced.
